well TXG now has more gigabit ports than we know what to do with we just invested in 3 x 48port gigabit switchs for hosting lans. We hope to see you at the next lan with even more gigabit goodness in store
here are the switches Last edited by Jeff : 12-04-2009 at 10:26 AM. |

How are the switches linked together, copper or GBIC?

we have 4 gbic cards that are copper/cat5, so that question doesn't really make any sense

That makes perfect since when most everyone uses the GBIC uplink of a switch for fiber.

to answer the question we use cat 5 trunks to link them together one lan we had a 8 gig trunk linking one of the 48 ports

Is there a plan to change over the net connection or bring in more for load balancing because when I was there servers were giving me a lat of 400+, or am I just missing something?

We can make a plan if you are willing to donate the cash
There was nothing broken at the last LAN, and I'm sure your pings were waaaay better than you would get at quakecon or ghettolan. Gaming on the internet is not a priority on the firewall, and due to limited bandwidth, there isn't much available for it. Gaming at a LAN party should be done on the LAN, and the network is created and arranged for such activity. We should have an extra 3mb down and 1mb up available if Charter get's their butt in gear, but I still wouldn't expect to play internet games while at a LAN party. |

When everyone tries to use the internet, it will be slow. And gaming at a LAN party on the internet, is not a priority.
Things will be a bit better next lan due to having faster speed.

Well when I want to play TF2 or L4D and 4 people are playing CS and the rest of the lan is doing nothing it forces you to go outside of network.
Dare I say a L4D/2 tournie, CSS tounrie, TF2 match set, and whatever else(BF2 demo I guess). Spread it over the whole night so you can take breaks if you want to. |

Yeah we're trying to find ways to get the whole LAN to play the same thing, but it's proven to be a challenge :/ BF2 had a great turnout I thought, but we never get more than 2 or 3 people interested in TF2, and we just did a CSS tourney at the previous LAN.
After what you taught me, we will begin hosting more dedicated l4d/2 servers and I know that the cloud connectivity issues were what kinda killed that, but we have played tons of l4d at our lans before. |

Here is my thought on the subject. I assume given that most LANs have a repeat history for the people there then someone should know what most people have there game wise. So before hand we post a list of games that are going to be played as a group. You open up "registration", either a forum posting but most likely when people check in, where each person signs up for the games that they want to "compete" in. Then either have a random team assignment or a captain system.
I would stick with random since not everyone has everything that gets played, pre-built teams only works if everyone is playing from what I have seen. Then at a certain time have reg closed and give everyone 10-15 minutes to get set-up before the games start. You have a projector so info can be easily displayed. Work through one set of games with a 15 minute break between rounds with the possibility for teams to waive it if they want. Then post of results at the end and give an hour rest between. The idea is to work on 1 hour blocks of everything. I wrote a simple random number generator so teams can be kind of fair or team pick order is fair in case there are more captains the coin heads. After it is all said and done people can still run their own lan games or if they don't have a certain game they can organize their own thing. I already got bored with that and am working on something where I can enter player names and it will spit out random teams. If I make it to the LAN on the 12th I would be willing to run it for a test. Last edited by _k_ : 12-05-2009 at 01:11 AM. |

We have tournament software that came with the registration site but the people that generally come to our LANs aren't huge on tournaments, case in point, we had one scheduled for the Halloween LAN - no one registered, so we changed it to a game that the LAN voted on right in the middle of the LAN and it still fell through ..

Yeah. Have to leave the tourneys for Quakecon, the crowd we get sometimes at the txg lans doesn't really do tourneys.

We do do some tourneys and we usually do post up the games we are going to try and get going thru the night. This last LAN was very last minute and most of the time we had to get ready for (keep in the mind the holidays and we all have full time jobs) was spent working up there to get the network even capable of hosting a LAN (such as network drops, power, running the PA system, network hardware and configurations, and testing everything) the nnext lan we will have game polls and stuff posted i am sure, and then the janurary LAN is going to be the big one. : )

well the december lan is mainly a christmas party, so i wouldnt look for much in the way of tournies or organized play, we are just allowed pc's to goof off on. Our LAN's seem to be more of a geek out and hang out with friends than OMG I HAVE TO SHOW MY 1337 SKILLZ!

2 lans ago we piloted gig-e to the tables, last lan we improved by adding wall drops to just about every seat, and this lan we are improving with these new 48port switches, so more people will be on the same switch as others

awesome, we'd love to have you back
. I won't be bringing my file server this time around, but I will have it again in january. Also, we had 1 48 port (courtesy of nacho) before, but now we have 4 48 ports ![]() |

What is the model of the 48 port switch from nacho?

the greatest bottlenecks will be between Switches, if everyone runs gigabit and there is file sharing running wild, the sinlge gigabit link between the switches will be easily overwhelmed.
If no filesharing is happening, you won't really benefit from Gigabit except for bragging rights, with no filesharing, you could host a lan on a 10 megabit switch with very little to no lag at all.

Who said anything about a single gigabit?
in the past we have run 8gb trunks between our existing 48 port and the core, and we usually run a 3 gigabit trunk to our server switch. We like trunking ![]() |

ok cool,
I wasn't sure if you knew about trunking... lol Glad you do!Our lans' network isn't trunked but we run 100mbit, with with Gigabit Fiber Interlinks between I am in charge of our networks for our yearly big lan, and our 3 main switches are 48 port Cisco 3548 2x 24 port Cisco 3524 Networking just fascinates me! ( maybe that is why I have a networking degree. lol ) btw I am hoping to finally attend one of the lans in '10, kinda sucks when your eyes are bad enough that you can't drive....

Nacho may know a thing or two about a thing or two about networks.
So I'm told...
